First planned mission to the moon since 1972
On Thursday, NASA announced that it would be starting a bidding process of private companies that would be tasked with the creation of the next generation of lunar landers. According to NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, three companies will develop, build, and fly the landers for planned missions to the moon and mars by 2024. The companies are SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Dynetics.
“This is the last piece that we need in order to get to the moon” by 2024, Administrator Bridenstine said. There have been no missions to the moon since the final Apollo missions in 1972. NASA will ultimately go with the company that will have the highest likelihood of success for the 4-year deadline. The launch system and space capsules will still be developed by NASA for the upcoming mission
